quick and dirty

i've been LJ-absent for quite a while, so here's an update of sorts:

New CTRLSHFT is blazing along. i think you'll like this. not done yet, but finally making some real headway. starting to get a hang of how to efficiently utilize a studio that has began creeping outside of the digital domain and integrating analog hardware into my music as a whole. 's taken a while to make it feel right. FYI a good compressor will go a long way. :)

with that in mind, new-ish studio goodies (pictures soon probably)!:

Moog Voyager RME
Moog MF-107 Freqbox
Empirical Labs EL8-X Distressor
BLUE Bluebird Condenser Mic

non-music:
started playing GTA:SA again for no particular reason
really enjoying venture bros.
really pining for grindhouse dvds
need new job
apparently going to poland next year

NEW S&H and Noise modulation, tons of great new MIDI assignment abilities, free-range over pot mapping (tweaking cutoff and res at the same time is now totally do-able), not to mention a cool new tuning/re-calibration tool. hats off to them supporting their new product in a BIG way. I can only imagine what else is in store. anyone in the market for a new monosynth should seriously consider this over a relic on ebay. seriously.

-----

Future-Retro on the horizon:
The Future Retro XS. A semi-modular synth made in the likeness of the MS-20, lots of suprises though. it is going to be incredible. prelim specs here! click on the youtube flick, theres 4 more vid clips up of the same demonstration. Biiiiiig Basstm.

-----

Dave Smith Instruments in the future:
From Winter NAMM show '07, Dave Smith presents his up and coming ''BoomChik'', a 4 osc ANALOG DRUM MACHINE! no big news yet, but click on the pic for a bigger image and dream about it for a while. this could potentially kick jomox's butt, knowing FULL well of what the diminutive powerhouse "Evolver" is capable of. this should be intensely cool. hopefully it'll be a reality for 2008!
----

this is going to be a great year for analog synths.

oh yeah, and CTRLSHFT is coming along awesomely. i can't wait to share the new album with you. more posts on developments with that as they come, i've got work to do. ;)

New CP-Enclosure-Style Moogerfooger Units 101-104 (mock-ups)

I thought it'd be fun to do some measurements between the CP units and the normal pedal-type moogerfoogers and see it if would be feasible to make CP-style enclosure moogerfoogers instead of the cumbersome pedal-type ones. Admittedly, Moog would probably never make these, as it would be a little redundant, and purely for the synth and modular enthuiasts.. but then again, moog seems so be doing alot of cosmetic makeovers on their production line lately (customer voyager wood and lights, stage edition LP, etc).

All of these images are scaled to be exactly compatible with the size difference between the CP and Pedal-Type MF enclosures. I left the dual attenuators in on the right hand side because: A) They're aesthetically pleasing and placed perfectly for compatibility in the I/O chain. B) Extremely useful in a modular setup. They might add a slight increase in the price would Moog ever consider creating these, but i think it'd be nominal in comparison with the benefits.

How do you folks feel about a design like this? I would like to think moog has a pretty good user base for these devices by now, so at least they could probably count on a fairly good response (i know i'd be all about trading up for versions like these instead.)

p.s. i might be inclined to make mock-ups of the 105 and 107 once theres diagrams available. otherwise it's pretty time intensive, so i'll probably pass. use your imagination though, i'm totally confident they could convert those units to CP-style enclosures too!

also: here's a image at how'd they'd feel in a rack unit, just for fun. i included my mock-up for a ADSR-type CP-Unit, and a illustrated cp-251 in there for kicks.

alsox2: not familiar with this stuff, but you're interested? Here's the run down: Moogerfoogers are analog audio effects machines, with the ability to be inconnected and share voltage through the use of patch cables to create new sounds but automating the movement of knobs and functions within the units. They rule with awesome on many levels. Check Moog Music for details on the individual units. Here's some images of the originals I'm making edited mock-ups for:

oof!

holy shit
Skinny Puppy 'Mythmaker' FTW

serious. buy it. PRONTO

i'm sure it's being received as un-listenable in the eyes of some these days.. trite imaginations. the whole ''it's not dark/heavy enough'' thing is more merited, but fuck, how about a frakin' change of pace from the obvious?! see between the lines people! ALL IS NOT SO BLACK AND WHITE

i've listened to it a good 8 or 9 times through by now, and i can safely say i really fucking like it, and i still keep finding new things to enjoy about it too. in my opinion, mark walk's addition to the SP lineup is great, despite it's evolutionary change to the sound. he gives a very sickly-saccharine flavor to the sound that simultaneously clouds and exponentializes the cryptic subversions underneith. sure, it's a different sound.. but it's really going back to what puppy has been good at from the get go. i'd even go as far as saying they would've been doing this kind of thing (and to a large extent they have) earlier had the technology been capable of it back in the days of hardware samplers, etc. tripped out and brilliant. amazing. truly an abstract impressionist work of kaleidoscopic wonder and muse!

praise appraised, i can see how that kind of complexity/deconstructive nature can turn people off to the sound.. sometimes you just want some loud repetitive noise. this album is pretty much the antithesis of repetition, aside from a few choice tracks that instead choose to hyperbolize the message. but anyone who passes on this one purely based on a longing for a xeroxed version of another SP album like TDP produced, (let's really think about this a second) almost 20 years ago is fucking stupid.

in close: this album rules. it's exactly what we need right now, and par the course for SP's work, few will realize it until some time has past.

they are trailblazers. they are the future. it's to be expected.

that's my review i guess.

new moogerfooger concept

So I thought I'd try making a mock-up of new CP moogerfooger, in light of the modular possibilities starting to arise from the wake of MF-107 coming out. This fooger would add essential modular functionality plus a bunch of fun features you really only get with a modular set-up usually. And yes, I'm aware there's already a ring mod in the fooger line..two is better. :)

Here's a quick run-down of the mock-up:
---------

~Envelope Generator: Voltage generator that changes over time, use with pitch/gate dynamics/filters etc.

Logarithmic/Exponential switch: Switches between two different response slopes. A neat feature I wish more envelopes had. :)

Attack: Controls attack time
Decay: Controls decay time
Sustain: 0 - 5v
Release: Controls release time

Gate: Incoming gate signal starts the envelope.

Pedal IN: Controls voltage of overall ADSR signal.

+OUT: Positive envelope out.
-OUT: Inverted envelope out.

--------

~VCA: Allows control of the amplitude of a signal. Used in conjuction with envelope generator to shape dynamics.

DRIVE: Sets the output level of the amplifier.

ENV IN: CV Input for dynamic amplitude control of the drive knob. ENV OUTs, Pedal IN, etc would all apply here.

IN: Audio IN
OUT: Audio OUT

--------

CLIPPER: Clips the tips of a waveform (top and bottom) to create new waveforms.

LEVEL: Controls voltage level at which clipping will start.

Pedal IN: Allows for CV control of the LEVEL knob.

IN: Audio IN
OUT:Audio OUT

--------

Rectifier: (description taken from synthesizers.com) The rectifier has the effect of taking the bottom of the waveform (the part below 0 volts) and flipping it to the top. When a sawtooth or ramp wave is used as an input, the output will become a triangle wave at 1/2 the frequency which is level shifted. When a triangle waveform is used as the input, the output will be triangle at twice the frequency. When a sine waveform is used as the input, the output will be a waveform with unusual harmonic content at twice the frequency. When a square or pulse waveform is used as the input, the output will be only be a small spike which has minimal usage.

Patching the output of the clipper into the input of the rectifier can create a whole new group of waveforms in which every other cycle is clipped.

neat huh?

IN: Audio IN
+OUT: Rectified Audio OUT
-OUT: Inverted Rectified Audio OUT

-----------

RING MODULATOR: Audio signal X and Y are multiplied, creating an output that contains the sum and difference of the input signals. A very simple but lovely version of MF-102.

X: Audio IN
Y: Audio IN
OUT: Ring Modulated Audio OUT

--------

ATTENUATOR: Same as CP-251's, these cut down the strength of a voltage signal.

Knobs adjust the attenuation.
IN: CV IN
OUT:CV OUT

------

So there ya have it. I'd really dig something like this for my moogerfooger rig. How about you?

big moog-y post

So, i thought'd i'd give this idea another crack. thus far i can't find any bugs in the design, although admittedly i've never built anything like this before, so it's purely conjecture. I based this concept off of the old moog modular vco, the voyager, the murf, and the ehx microsynth. if moog is ever gonna put a vco/vca fooger out, this is pretty much the best angle i can think of from a sales POV.

anyway, here's my new mock-up for the MF-106:

and the back-end:

After brainstorming the possibility of a vco-type unit that'd be 2 standard foogers (not cp251) wide, i ditched that idea as it was a waste of good rack space, and would seriously limit how many of this things people could really have around. back to the single-fooger drawing board. naturally, the Murf knobs came to mind next, as this was the only way to really fit an env AND osc section on a standard fooger template. from there, it was mostly trying to triage the knobs into most useful functionality, as well as realism. The only thing i'm not sure about at this point, is the decay knob with the "hold" feature... mostly i just wanted a way to still sneak a sustain knob in there. dunno if that works in a real application or not.

here's a quick rundown of the knobs:

Frequency: Allows pitch adjustment +7/-7 semitones, just like the voyager

Octave:Allows a huge range of octave-based pitch adjustment, going from lfo range (handy) to very high stuff, C6, C7 or so?, close to voyager.. a little different.

Wave:Sweepable waveform adjuster, voyager yaddayadda

Drive:Doubles as the VCA for the OSC, and for cranking the audio in signal

Mix: Mix between the incoming signal, and the raw oscillator.

Trigger Sensitivity: adjust this to screw with how frequently the envelope responds to the incoming signal, based on the dynamic content. cool for sputtering gated sfx.

Attack: Amplitude EG Attack. like the voyager's . (_/)--\_

Decay: Sort of a bastard child of decay and sustain in this case, as I thought it'd be cool to add some sort of gate-type function sustain functionality to this unit SOMEWHERE. ...as to whether this is something that would be doable, i'm not sure. _/(--)\_

Release: Amplitude EG Release. like the voyager's. _/--(\_)

----

BACK PANEL:

Audio In: Hardwired to the Osc freq, so that the osc will follow the incoming signal's pitch. By turning the mix knob all the way over to zero, you would effectively be able to run anything you like into the ADSR without the osc present. This could be great for a multitude of purposes, which i'll refrain from going over.

Freq: White labels = inputs. This controls the pitch of the oscillator.

Gate: Takes +5v gate signals to open and close the EG. Note that when this is plugged in, the EG is no longer always open.

Wave: cv control input for the wave knob.

Mix: cv control input for the mix knob. also an opportunity for ring-mod-like sounds with a audio-range lfo going in there.

Audio Out: audio output of the mix.

Freq Out: This sends out the pitch cv of the oscillator, useful for everything cv or audio related. see above, too ;)

Env Out: Similar to the output of the MF-101. A cv output based on the dynamics of the incoming signal.

Sync In: Forces the oscillator to slave itself to the incoming cv signal; that is, restart it's waveform from the beginning, each time the incoming cv signal starts a new waveform cycle. Very cool.

-----

That's all i got. god i hope this happens in some form or another. in the meanwhile, i'll be waiting in line for my LP... ;)

(as always, your thoughts/opinions/jeers are appreciated)

studio moog addition mock-up image

so i'm working on building a pretty slick little pseudo modular, and made a mock-up image of what it'd look like sitting on top of a 6'-long collapsable table when it's completed.

the mock-up unit layout would be from left to right, top -> down:

Moog MF-101, MF-102 (x2)
Moog CP-251 (x2)
Neutrik Patchbay
|
Moog Little Phatty
|
Moog MF-103, MF-104z, MF-105
Future-Retro Mobius Analog Sequencer
Furman Power Conditioner

---

yep. someday.. soon-ish.

moog modular testing, just got the cp-251 today.

silly beat ---> mf-101 + mf-102 + mf-103 + mf-104z + mf-105 + cp-251 = this.

's really noisy but if you make it through the whole mp3, you'll get a good taste of the capabilities/havoc of such a setup (i ran out of patch cables!). if moog comes out with a [osc/amp/env] 'fooger, the missing link will be complete: a fully functional modular with all cells capable of acting independent of the group or a communal power supply. honestly, this is waaay more appealing to me right now than the litty fatty or even the voyager are; a good midi controller and 3 of those osc units (that damn well better exist soon!) would be killer.
